The Envirothon program is North America’s largest environmental competition for high school students with the United States, Canada and China participating in the study of forest, wildlife, aquatic and soil sciences along with an annual environmental-themed challenge. Housatonic’s history of involvement has led to representing the State of Connecticut as the state champions at the North American competition nine times. Our students have competed in the provinces of New Brunswick, Manitoba and Ontario; explored the environments of Arizona and the Grand Canyon as well as Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming; and on the east coast, have represented Connecticut in the Smoky Mountains and coastal North Carolina, Gettysburg, Maryland and the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Our students have placed in the top 10 of North America five different times and have taken top honors as North American champions.
The mission of the NCF-Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable skilled and dedicated citizens who have an understanding of natural resources and are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment. The Envirothon mission is accomplished by developing in young people an understanding of the principles and practices of natural resource management and ecology and through practice dealing with complex resource management decisions.
